Yesterday, I had the unique opportunity to sit in on a job interview for our new non-profit organization, which we are starting for the people New Haven. It hit me during the interview that I had the opportunity to pick up some pearls of wisdom, that I can use some day and pass along to others. So here is what I got: (feel free to add any other pearls of wisdom)
- Interviewer asks the interviewee...."Tell me about you!" Nothing tough, right? We can learn alot about a person simply by listening to them share about themselves and their history.
- "Why are you here? What has you in the city at this point in time of your life?" This was just a cool way to ask what are you doing now or currently. Pretty easy so far.
- "Do you have any geographical pulls or desires for your next job?" Makes sense; slick way of waking if you want to stay in New Haven. I think I could do this interviewing thing, but let's wait and see.
- Interviewer makes sure that he/she shares what our vision is and what this particular role plays in creating that vision. Duhhh, I should have known this!
- Share the job description and financial package development process
- Share what would be expected in the next 18 months if the position is offered and accepted. Yeah, I mean, every potential employee needs to know what the expectations and timelines are. Makes sense!
- Finally, "what remaining questions might you have?" and "When do you think we should talk again about where you are in your discerning process?"
