The inner city of New Haven, Ct., which is primarily made up of 3 major burrows, has a very odd religious schematic landscape. There is a church on nearly every corner, and if not on a corner, they are located in places that defy the human imagination. And yet, despite the diversity of expression, one common denominator is found among them all: The great divide between the have's and have not's.
The sad reality to this landscape is that success is supposed to be the marker of spiritual blessing and favor. In my 3 years in the inner city of New Haven, this mindset is the predominate sentiment. Basically, we are blessed if we are good and cursed if we are not. The level of sadness that is present because of this misrepresentation of the Gospel is beyond words. All those churches and no one is getting the gospel of grace preached to them; that their spiritual status and blessing before God has nothing to do with them and everything to do with the work of Jesus Christ!
Oh that the Spirit of the Living God would open the ears and minds of the people of our inner cities!!!
