Tonight in the men's bible study, we looked at Genesis 38 and the actions of Judah and his daughter-in-law, Tamar; they are just like us modern day pilgrims: Screwed up and Self-sufficient travelers. They put on full display the human tendency to take life into our own hands and try to save ourselves through our illegitimate means. Nonetheless, despite their attempts at trying to circumvent God's plans for their lives, His redemptive purposes cannot be thwarted. Not only can they not be stopped, but they cannot be ceased from bringing us good into our lives.
As a Christian and pastor, this lesson both comforts and saddens me. First, I am so glad that I am puny compared to the sovereign will and mercy of God; many of us would have destroyed ourselves if it weren't for Christ interrupting our plans. Secondly, this very truth exposes the anemic nature of my faith and prayer life; I trust God for so little and thus ask Him to exercise His good and pleasing will for such small things. Phillip's was right when He stated in the title of His book, Your God is too small!
